Advanced Search Page
This page, along with the Advanced Search Result Page, implements Project Hirtius's
advanced search feature. By comparision with the Basic and Timeline Search Page, this search
interface gives you a much finer control over your search results, but also
asks you to be a lot more specific in your query parameters. The main
difference in this respect is that you have to select a single object type
as your current search topic (you can't apply the same search parameters to
different object types in a single operation).
The working principle of this page is to give you the ability to specify
values for any of the fields that are present on the currently selected
object type edition page. When values are specified for multiple fields, all
these values are ANDed together in the query (e.g. searching for a slide
whose description contains "this" and whose location is equals to
"that").
Of course, some fields are handled with a bit more flexibility. For date
fields, you can typically specify a range of values, for instance. For
drop-down fields, you get a multi-select control. For flags, you can
specify whether the query should match it only when set, when unset, or whether
it should be ignored altogether. Etc. All this will be described in more details
below.
To be clear, this page only deals with acquiring the query parameters. Their
validation (when applicable), the building of the query string, running it
against the database, and formatting and displaying the resulting data is all
taken care of by the Advanced Search Result Page.
These are the object types (and non-object entities) that the Advanced
Search Page currently supports:
- Slides
- Sources
- Events
- Individuals
- Families
- Tiddlers
- Books and Articles
- Log entries
To reach the Advanced Search Page of any supported object type:
- From the Main Application Menu (or indeed almost any other Project Hirtius page),
click on the "Search" icon in the header
(). This gets you to the Basic and Timeline Search Page in
"basic" or "full text search" mode.
- Click on the Advanced link in the navigation bar just below
the page header. This gets you to the Advanced Search Page in "object type selection"
mode.
- Use the Object type drop-down to make your selection and
click Next to reach the object type-specific query form.
The Advanced Search Page supports 8 different modes of operation:
Please note: when covering the various fields present on
each object type-specific query page, I will describe them only as regards
their behaviour in the context of the query. For the exact meaning,
values and format of these fields, please refer to the Fields section
of the appropriate object edition page help content.
Also please note that for all text fields on these forms, the match is done
on case-insensitive substrings. Accented characters are considered equivalent
to their non-accented form in this context (for instance, 'e' will match all
forms of E: 'e', 'é' and 'è' to name but a few).
As already mentioned above, when multiple fields are filled on this form,
their values are ANDed together in the resulting query. In the case of
multi-select controls, on the other hand, when multiple values are selected
they are linked with OR in the resulting query, unless a radio button
control placed nearby allow you to control it explicitely.
- Navigation bar
- At the top of the page, just below the header, you'll find links that
you can use to switch between the four main search modes: Basic,
Timeline, Advanced and Calendar Tools. This control acts
like a set of "Tabs", where the currently active one is rendered as plain
text, and other available choices are rendered as bold-face font links. On
sub-pages (such as the "Object Type Selection" or the "Search Result" page),
the "current" tab will be rendered in regular font and link back to the
previous step (the query terms entry form, for instance).
- Object type drop-down
- Select the target of your query in the object type list:
- Slides
- Sources
- Events
- Individuals
- Families
- Tiddlers
- Books and Articles
- Log entries
- Next button
- Submits your choice and reaches the next screen (the appropriate query
entry form).
More info about fields: see Slides Edition Page.
- SlideID fields
- Not to be confused with the object ID. Integer values are expected. Since
there are two fields, the first one serves as minimum value, the second as
maximum. Both range limits are inclusive. If only one of them is present, an
open-ended range is used (e.g. "any slideID below or equal to X" if only the
second one is filled in).
- Location field
- Filters on the location field.
- Country multi-select

- Since there are two sets of controls for each field, the first one serves
as minimum value, the second as maximum. Both range limits are inclusive. If
only one of them is present (min or max), an open-ended range is used.
Taken together, these two fields allow you to define a rectangular
geographical area, and to filter your search result by considering only
those Slides that are located within that area.
